Joseph J. Cutonilli

Joseph Cutonilli, Pre-arranged Funerals, Neil Regan Funeral Home, Scranton, PA

Joseph, J. Cutonilli, 95, of South Scranton, died Thursday, November 21, at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center after an illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, the former Jean Marie Thomas, in 2008. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Antoinette D'Agostino Cutonilli. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist until its closing, and later St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

Joe was a graduate of West Scranton High School where he played football for the Invaders. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Prior to retirement, Joe owned a service station on Main Avenue for over 50 years.

As a mechanic, Joe loved his car and kept it immaculate. He and Jean traveled extensively and they took their family to Ocean City, New Jersey, every year. A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his family will miss his hilarious, off-the-cuff sayings that made everyone laugh. He lovingly took care of Jean during her illness in the years preceding her death. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by a son, Thomas Cutonilli; a daughter, Ann McCann and husband William; three granddaughters: Kristy McCann Flynn and husband, William; Jean Bryers and husband Nicholas; and Alexis Cutonilli Pio and husband, Joseph; three great-grandchildren: Noelle, Genevieve, and Jack; a sister-in-law, Ann Eastman; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Cutonilli, in 1986; a brother Robert in 2009 and his wife Peggy Cutonilli in 2011.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude for the extraordinary care and attention given to Joseph by the staff at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center.

The funeral will be Friday, November 29, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave. Friends and family may call at the church prior to Mass, from 9-10 a.m. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery will immediately follow Mass.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, 401 Penn Avenue, Scranton PA 18503.
